Ta Malaka Matia take their name from the Greek for ‘Soft Eyes’ (Τα μαλακά μάτια) TMM comprise of Jacob Richards-Powell (Moush, Black Wesker, WAKEY!) and Steven George Jones (Bosch) the two-piece unit perform semi-improvisational soundscapes across video collages, drawing from classic plays and great tales of old.
The band use a holistic process of music creation with each track rising up from jam sessions that last several hours, guitar loops and drums are recorded through various devices at once and combined to create an overall workable track, vocals, effects, loops and layers are then added in post to fully conceptualise the piece. As a result the band are not known for ever playing the same piece twice, immortalising the tracks as recordings only.
In 2025 the duo performed a live set spanning 1.5 hours over a tapestry of footage that when combined, presented the tale of Oedipus Rex featuring Adam Ant. Live performances are heavily interactive with members of the audience actively encouraged to provide vocals as and when they see fit. TMM provide the audience with programs ahead of time often featuring lines from the play in question.
To date, the band has released two singles, a double album and the full-length Oedipus movie is available to watch on Youtube, featuring the live soundtrack recorded at The Pen & Wig in Newport. The double album is available for purchase on CD via bandcamp. The band have also collaborated with artist, Last Man On The Moon.
